BYD EV Export Sourcing — Han, Tang, Atto 3, Seal from China
Published: May 2026 | Updated: May 2026 | 10 min read
Why BYD is the Global EV Export Leader
BYD (Build Your Dreams) has overtaken Tesla as the world's largest manufacturer of new energy vehicles, producing over 3 million units annually. The company manufactures its own batteries (Blade Battery LFP technology), electric motors, semiconductors, and most other core components in-house — giving it unmatched cost control and supply chain resilience.
BYD vehicles are now exported to over 70 countries across Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and Oceania. Sourcing BYD EVs directly from China can yield savings of 15-35% compared to local dealer pricing in most markets, while providing access to the full model range including domestic-market variants not available internationally.

Charging Standards & Country Compatibility
BYD vehicles sold in China use the GB/T charging standard. When exporting to other markets, compatibility with local charging infrastructure must be considered:
GB/T (China) → CCS2 (Europe/Australia/NZ)
Adapter required for DC fast charging. AC charging may be compatible. Export-spec BYDs sold in Europe already use CCS2. For domestic-market cars, we can supply GB/T-to-CCS2 adapters (verify power rating can handle your BYD model's maximum charging speed).
GB/T (China) → CCS1 (North America)
GB/T-to-CCS1 adapters available but less common. AC charging via J1772 adapter works reliably. For large-volume US/Canada imports, consider ordering export-spec BYDs with CCS1 from the factory. Note: BYD does not currently sell passenger vehicles in the US market.
GB/T (China) → CHAdeMO (Japan, older DC chargers)
GB/T-to-CHAdeMO adapters exist but have power limitations. Not recommended as a primary solution. Most new BYDs are moving away from CHAdeMO compatibility. Better to target markets with CCS infrastructure.
GB/T (China) → Type 2 AC (Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia)
Many markets with European automotive influence use Type 2 AC. China-market BYDs use GB/T AC, which is physically similar — adapters are simple and inexpensive. DC fast charging will require GB/T-to-CCS2 adapter.
Suitability by Target Market
Southeast Asia
Best Models: Atto 3, Dolphin, Seagull
Strong charging infrastructure in Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam. BYD has official presence. RHD available for Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia. Atto 3 is already the best-selling EV in Thailand. Hot climate — Blade Battery handles it well.
Middle East (UAE, Jordan, Saudi Arabia)
Best Models: Han, Tang, Atto 3, Seal
Growing EV charging networks in GCC and Jordan. BYD showrooms operating in Dubai and Amman. Premium models (Han, Tang, Seal) favored. Heat-resistant Blade Battery is a strong selling point. UAE has aggressive EV adoption targets.
Latin America
Best Models: Dolphin, Seagull, Atto 3, Yuan Pro
BYD is entering Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Colombia with local assembly plans. Price-sensitive markets favor Dolphin and Seagull. Chile has zero-tariff trade agreement with China. LHD market — no conversion needed.
Africa
Best Models: Atto 3, Dolphin, Seagull
Charging infrastructure is the main constraint. Focus on markets with developing EV policy: Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, Morocco. Seagull's sub-$10K price is game-changing for African markets. Solar + EV synergy is promising for off-grid areas.
Europe
Best Models: Atto 3, Seal, Dolphin, Han
BYD has official EU presence. EU-spec models already use CCS2. Competitive pricing undercuts European and Korean EVs. Homologation required (WVTA). Tariffs: EU imposed additional tariffs on Chinese EVs (check current rates).
Australia / New Zealand
Best Models: Atto 3, Seal, Dolphin
Official BYD distribution. RHD models available factory-direct. Atto 3 is a top-3 selling EV in Australia. Strong charging infrastructure. Very EV-friendly policy environment.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist for BYD EVs
When sourcing a used or new BYD EV from China for export, a thorough inspection is essential. Here's what to verify:
Battery Health (Most Critical)
- SOH (State of Health) report from BYD diagnostic tool — should be ≥95% for nearly-new, ≥85% acceptable for used
- Check for any battery error codes in BMS (Battery Management System)
- Verify battery pack has no physical damage, swelling, or fluid leaks (visual inspection under vehicle)
- Charge to 100% and verify displayed range matches expected range for age/mileage
- Request charging history report if available — consistent DC fast charging accelerates degradation
- Check battery warranty status (BYD offers 8yr/150,000km on Blade Battery for most models)
General Vehicle Inspection
- VIN verification against Chinese registration documents — confirm no theft/accident history
- Odometer verification — check for tampering via ECU scan
- Body panel alignment and paint thickness measurement — detect accident repairs
- Suspension and underbody inspection — look for battery pack underbody scrapes
- All electronics: infotainment, climate control, ADAS features, cameras, sensors
- Charging port condition and test charge with both AC and DC (if available)
Software & Connectivity
- Infotainment language — Chinese domestic cars have Chinese-only UI; confirm if English/local language can be set
- Navigation/GPS — China-market cars use Baidu Maps; may not work outside China
- OTA update capability — confirm updates will work in destination country
- BYD app connectivity — China-market cars bind to WeChat/BYD China app; international binding may differ
- SIM card / eSIM — China-market telematics module may not work in destination country
Documentation & Export Readiness
- Original purchase invoice (fapiao) from authorized BYD dealer
- Vehicle registration certificate (dengjizheng) — verify no outstanding loans/liens
- Export declaration and customs clearance documents
- Certificate of Origin — for duty preference claims in destination country
- Homologation assessment — does destination country accept China-spec EVs?
- Charging adapter package included with vehicle
Shipping BYD EVs: Special Considerations
Shipping electric vehicles involves additional regulations and precautions compared to ICE vehicles. Lithium batteries are classified as Dangerous Goods (UN 3171 for vehicles, UN 3480/3481 for loose batteries), requiring special handling and documentation. Key considerations:
Shanghai → Southeast Asia
Transit: 8-15 days
Est. Cost: $1,200-2,000
Container shipping preferred for EVs (enclosed, monitored). Ro-Ro available but some operators restrict EVs or require SoC below 50%. Multiple sailings per week.
Shanghai → Middle East
Transit: 18-22 days
Est. Cost: $1,500-2,200
SoC must typically be 30-50% for maritime transport. DG (Dangerous Goods) declaration required. Container with ventilation or temperature monitoring recommended for premium shipments.
Guangzhou/Shenzhen → Latin America
Transit: 30-40 days
Est. Cost: $1,800-3,000
BYD has its own shipping fleet (BYD Explorer vessels) that may offer direct routes. Container shipping with DG declaration. Verify destination port accepts EV imports as DG cargo.
Tianjin → Africa
Transit: 30-45 days
Est. Cost: $1,800-2,800
Container strongly preferred. Some African ports lack EV-aware handling — verify port capabilities. SoC at 30-50% is the maritime safety standard. Insurance: ensure policy covers battery-related incidents.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I buy a China-market BYD or an export-spec version?
Export-spec BYDs (sold through BYD's international dealers) have the correct charging standard (CCS2 for most markets), multi-language infotainment, and local warranty coverage. However, they are typically 15-35% more expensive than China domestic-market equivalents. For markets without official BYD presence, China-market cars offer the best value — but factor in adapter costs, language settings, and limited warranty support.
How do I verify a used BYD's battery health?
The most reliable method is a diagnostic scan using BYD's proprietary VDS (Vehicle Diagnostic System) tool at an authorized service center. This reads the BMS data including SOH percentage, cell voltage variation, and charge cycle count. We can arrange this as part of our pre-purchase inspection service. Third-party OBD scanners may not access full BYD BMS data. Always insist on a proper VDS battery health report.
Can BYD's Chinese infotainment system be changed to English?
Most BYD models from 2023 onwards include English language options in the settings menu. Earlier models may be Chinese-only. Even with English UI, some features (voice assistant, built-in navigation, app store) are China-specific and won't function outside China. Apple CarPlay / Android Auto may or may not be available depending on model and trim. Check this before purchasing.
Do I need to pay EV import tariffs and are they different from ICE cars?
EV import duties vary significantly by country. Many countries offer reduced or zero tariffs for EVs as an environmental incentive: Chile (0%), Norway (0%), Thailand (0-2% for EVs from FTA countries), UAE (5% standard). Others treat EVs the same as ICE vehicles. Some countries have additional EV-specific requirements like GCC certification for Middle East markets or WVTA for Europe. Always check the latest destination country regulations.
What about right-hand drive BYD models?
BYD produces factory RHD versions of the Atto 3, Dolphin, and Seal for markets including Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, UK, and Japan. The Han and Tang are also available in RHD for some markets. Factory RHD models are built on the same production line as LHD, ensuring identical quality. Lead time for RHD orders is similar to LHD. China-market (domestic) BYDs are all LHD — you cannot convert them to RHD reliably.
